The massive 1.9 million-square-foot Essex Crossing complex, slated to transform the Lower East Side, may break ground as early as June of this year. Currently occupied by six acres of parking lots, the site is set to become a retail and residential complex, including multiple affordable housing units, as well as an urban farm. Developers of the controversial SPURA (Seward Park Urban Renewal Area) project say they are close to securing the necessary commercial leases that would allow the project to move forward and begin construction this year.
